RULES of the Track

(the following rules have been taken from the official BSA rules for the Pinewood Derby):

1. All cars must pass inspection by the race committee to qualify for the race. The final inspections will take place at the Bonsall community Center Friday, Feb. 19th from 4 - 7:30 pm. The inspection points are as follows:

a. The car must have been made during the current year (March '09 - Jan. '10).
b. The WIDTH of the car is not to exceed 2 3/4 inches.
c. The LENGTH of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
d. The WEIGHT of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
e. The overall car HEIGHT not to exceed 3 inches.
f. The minimum clearance between the CAR BOTTOM and the rolling surface is 3/8 inches.
g. The BODY WIDTH where the axles attach to the wheels shall not be LESS than 1 3/4 inches (so the wheels do not rub on the guide rail.)
e. Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as proved in the kit (official BSA parts only.) NO liquid lubricants allowed, "dry" lubricants are allowed (i.e.; graphite)
f. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushing are prohibited.
g. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
h. Any details added must be within length, width, and weight limits as above.
i. The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices.
j. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
k. The official number must be clearly marked or visible on BOTH sides of the car.

2. Each heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line and place their car on the track. All others will remain behind the barrier.

3. The starter will make sure cars are on the track properly and then will start the race.

4. All official race results will be recorded by the race computer and specialty software.

5. The car with the fastest time is the winner.

6. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, tire, etc. the heat will be re-run. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If on the second run another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time, but without the disqualified car(s).

7. After the results of each heat are recorded on the software, the drivers will take their cars back to the starting line until 6 (six) total heats per car per rank have been recorded. (Each Tiger will run 6 (six) heats, as will each Bear, each Wolf and each Webelo.)

8. The top three fastest cars from each rank will advance to the finals. All cars will again race in three heats to determine the fastest overall cars.

9. Awards will be announced after completion of the day's heats. Awards will be given for fastest track times, first through sixth place overall. "Special" awards will also be given for Best Paint Job, Most Creative Car Design, Ugliest Car, Cub Master's Choice, and Best Display of Cub Scout Spirit. Scouts will vote for "special" awards only above (except for "Cub Master Choice.")

10. ALL cars are required to be run by scout in attendance please. If Scout is not in attendance to race his car personally the car will not allowed to be entered into competition.

11. The GRAND WINNER will once again proudly represent our great Pack 735 in San Diego at the San Diego 500 held April 19th, 2009 in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot.

FINAL INSPECTION DAY:

Friday, Feb. 19th 4 - 7:30 PM at Bonsall Community Center. NO cars will be allowed to race UN-less they have been inspected and approved by the committee "Measurement Team." We will have limited measurement time race day (Sat morning 8 a.m.) BUT keep in mind if your car does not pass Sat. a.m. you will not have sufficient time to make the necessary changes in order to race when you are called. Once a car is officially checked in, no further lubrication, adjustments or work may be performed on it.

NOTE: Any and all questions or problems that may arise during the day's competition will be directed to and decided by a committee of three individuals designated by the Pinewood Derby committee and any and all determinations of this committee will be final. Thanks in advance for your professional participation. Regards and look forward to seeing you all there for some racing FUN!
